IN a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a hair salon belonging to Ms Zenzeleni Nyoni in Plumtree, Matabeleland South province, was burned down in a suspected targeted attack.
According to a neighbouring business owner, the salon had become a safe haven for the LGBTIQ+ community in Plumtree, as two of Ms Nyoni’s employees were also lesbian.
“Ms Nyoni is a business lady who was just trying to earn a living, but she didn’t discriminate against the LGBTIQ+ community and provided them with the required service,” the business owner revealed.
“However, she is now being targeted by some members of the Plumtree community, especially those allegedly linked to Zanu-PF, for promoting a taboo culture.”
On the fateful day, Ms Nyoni’s shop was allegedly attacked by assailants, with some wearing Zanu-PF t-shirts, who brutally assaulted her and her employees before setting the premises on fire.
The business owner stated that Ms Nyoni had lost two teeth due to the attack, and the other shop owners are now deeply concerned for her safety.
“It’s a terrible situation, and we’re all worried about what might happen next,” the business owner said.
“This kind of targeted violence and intolerance has no place in our community, and we hope the authorities will take swift action to investigate this incident and ensure the safety of all our citizens.”
The incident has sparked outrage and calls for greater protection for the LGBTIQ+ community in Plumtree, as well as a broader discussion about the need to foster a more inclusive and accepting society.
