Handbags thieves thrown behind bars

TWO women who stole handbags during a Salvation Army service in Mabelreign, Harare, have each been sentenced to an effective 15-month jail term.

Violet Jaure (27) and Maria Kawa (35) were found guilty of two counts of theft when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Babra Mateko.

On the first count, Mrs Mateko slapped Jaure and Kawa with 18 months in jail before suspending three months on condition of good behaviour. Mrs Mateko suspended another six months on condition that the duo restitutes $622 before May 31.

On the second count, Mrs Mateko sentenced the duo to 12 months in jail before suspending six months on condition that they restitute $450 before May 31.
