adminColleen Chireka of Unit D, Seke last week appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Toindepi Zhou. He pleaded guilty to one count of escaping from police custody but denied the theft charges. Mr Zhou remanded him in custody to June 28 for trial.
Chireka told the court that he escaped from custody in a bid to approach the person who sold the compressor to him. He was however, denied bail because he had shown that he was a flight risk. Agreed facts are that on May 27 this year, at Number 134 Guzha Chikwanha, Elias Makombe (56) left his compressor at his work place after knocking off.
The following day Makombe discovered that his compressor had been stolen. He followed a trail made by Chireka as he dragged the compressor which led him nowhere as it was at some point put in a vehicle. He was however, informed that Chireka had stolen the compressor. Chireka denied stealing the compressor insisting that he had bought it from an unidentified man. On June 2, the police accompanied Makombe to Chireka’s place and arrested him.
He was ordered to get into Makombe’s car while handcuffed. As they drove to the police station Chireka jumped from the moving vehicle and ran away.
