adminRobson Chimusumbu admitted yesterday to escaping from lawful custody when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Sandra Mupindu.
He was sentenced to three years imprisonment of which one year was suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Prosecutor Mr Moffat Makuvatsine had called for a custodial sentence.
He argued that the offence was very serious and undermined the authority of the police.
“The moral blameworthiness is high in that police details had to labour for six kilometres to re-arrest him,” he said.
The agreed facts are that on December 22 last year Chimusumbu was arrested in Harare while in possession of two vehicle alternators.
He told police that he had stolen the items in Mvurwi and he was transferred to Mvurwi Police Station.
Investigations, however, established that Chimusumbu had stolen the vehicle parts in the Chinamhora area after he failed to show police where he had stolen the motor spares in Mvurwi during indications.
He was then transferred to CID Chinamhora for further investigations.
