SOUTH African professional golfer Ricky Handler took an early lead at the National Aids Council pro-am tournament which began yesterday at Royal Harare.
The 33-year-old Dainfern Country Club Ambassador member was in outstanding form from the first tee and had four birdies to cap a fine opening day of the US$50 000 tournament.
The in-form South African, who missed out on winning the Altron Big Easy in July, made up last week to clinch victory at Houghton Golf Club and is carrying his fine form to Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe’s Mairos Katembenuka is tied second with Zambian Peter Wemba, who has since made Zimbabwe more of his second home, after they finished on two-under-par 70.
Katembenuka, a several time championship winner, will carry the country’s hopes this morning when the second round tees off with the Wingate-based professional hopeful to do well.
“I am happy with the performance and I look forward to continue doing well in tomorrow’s round (today). I know Royal Harare can be tough but it is playing well.
“I will remain focused and I hope that will help me to remain in contention,” said Katembenuka.
Robson Chinhoi and Visitor Mapwanya, who also played in the same three ball at last month’s Gokomere Open, will be in the same group again this morning. The Manicaland Province duo has become instant hits in the East African Tour and are expected to continue with their dominance back home.
Ignatius Mketekete, who had a terrible outing last time out, is making a good return after he carded level par 72 to stay in sixth place. Rashid Mahamad is the best-placed amateur on one-over-par 73 as Bradley Kombai completes the top seven on two-over.
