Harare City Council acquires more farms

farms were previously administered by Goromonzi Rural District Council.
A full council meeting held on Thursday approved the expansion following Government gazetting. The new boundaries increase the city’s land size by 63,7 percent.
“Council approves and notes the gazetted City of Harare new boundaries by incorporating . . .  Rumani Farm (494.7 ha), Acorn Farm (744.5ha), Echo Farm (972.7ha), Chirika Extension Farm (116.0ha) Lot J of Borrowdale Estate (657.7ha), Gurlyn Burton Farm (48.8ha) and Caledonia Farm (2 638.9ha) giving a total of 5 673.3ha,” reads part of the approved minutes.
The two-thirds increase translates to 567,33 square kilometres.
The addition brings Harare’s total land area to 1 457 square kilometres, which constitutes 63,7 percent increase in total land area. The increase in total land area comes at a time the city is battling to provide water to its residents. The new areas need to be connected to the city’s water and sewer reticulation while in some of the areas new facilities would need to be built.
Urban planning services director, Mr Psychology Chiwanga, said new water reservoirs would have to be built to cater for the residents.
He said residents in the area use septic tanks implying that the cost of sewer provision on the part of the city would be low.
