HARARE Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume said the City of Harare is going to work with the Government in dealing with drug dealers and its clampdown on drug and substance abuse.
Speaking at the Jacaranda Bloom Half Marathon on Sunday at Harare Gardens, Clr Mafume said council could not continue folding its arms when there were people who were selling poison to youths.
“We will be supporting the hard stance taken by the Government against drug dealers, and this menace will be defeated,” he said.
“The people who are selling and peddling drugs to our young people who are in primary school will have to face the wrath of the law and the wrath of the community. So let us all work together in eradicating this menace.”
Clr Mafume said the city is trying to improve water supply, waste collection, roads, lighting in the neighbourhoods and the sewer together with the solid waste system.
“As we do this, we must also beautify our neighbourhoods to promote a culture of planting trees, taking care of trees and taking care of our environment,” he said.
Clr Mafume said the issue of littering is about culture.
“You cannot eat while you are walking, so you cannot come out of your house with the intention of littering,” he said.
“You cannot buy food and munch on it as you are walking in the streets in town. Let us help each other to keep the environment clean, to keep Harare healthy.”
Turning to the event, Clr Mafume said the Jacaranda Bloom Half Marathon will become a permanent fixture.
“We are quite happy with the participation. We have new people who have joined, and participation has grown from 360 something, now we are at 543 participants. It shows that the half-marathon is getting traction,” he said.
