HARARE Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume says Harare City Council is committed to revamping and reviving its sports facilities since the capital is the mainstay of sports in the country.
Speaking at the Harare City Football Club Awards at Callies Sports Club on Wednesday, Clr Mafume said the council has 13 swimming pools.
“This year, we managed to make 12 functional. We also have over eight golf courses,” he said.
Cllr Mafume said the council is going to work on improving its sporting infrastructure.
“We are going to continue improving Rufaro Stadium. What we wanted is for the premier league to return to Rufaro and Harare, then bring back international soccer,” he said
“We are going to renovate seats in Rufaro Stadium as well as the changing rooms,” he said.
Cllr Mafume said Callies Sports Club is going to be the council’s football facility.
“We are going to revamp it after the court processes and make sure it becomes a clubhouse, and we have a proper facility supporting our team,” he said.
“But we agreed that Mabvuku be built by Scottland, Dzivarasekwa by Herentals, then we’re going to lease Gwanzura to Caps United.”
