HARARE City Council Acting Finance Director, Godfrey Kusangaya, says the Council is being owed over ZWG5 billion, with the bulk of the amount owed by residents, who are not paying their rates.
He was speaking during the launch of the revenue collection blitz in Harare yesterday. Kusangaya said a lot of the money was owed by residents unlike in the past where the bulk of the money was owed by commerce and industry.
“Council is being owed a lot of money out there, we are owed over ZWG5 billion and this amount is not a joke.
“Unlike in the past, a huge amount of the money is owed by residents, who are not paying their rates and bills.
“This time residents owe us around ZWG3 billion whereas the remainder is coming from commerce and industry,” said Kusangaya.
He said there are a lot of areas where the Council needs to improve in revenue collection.
“We have a number of revenue streams where we are failing to collect revenue efficiently.”
