Harare City Council starts repairing roads

Herald Reporter

Harare City Council has started filling potholes following a public outcry over the state of municipal roads. While work in medium and lowdensity areas appears to be progressing well, not much is being done in highdensity suburbs. The city council reportedly needs about US$57 million to effectively deal with the roads problem, which has not received much attention since 2002. Residents last week welcomed the work being done and called for its acceleration before more motorists encounter damage to their vehicles or accidents occur as drivers try to avoid potholes. “Most roads in the city were impassible as a result of potholes. . . We are happy that council is now doing something and we hope all roads will be refurbished,” said Mr Rabson Charega of Glen Norah. Mrs Getrude Mhuriro of Hatfield added: “One of the potholes that has been a threat to motorists along George Road (in Hatfield) has been refilled. However this was only after media reports about the pothole and The Herald published pictures showing how dangerous the situation had become.” Efforts to get a comment from council spokesperson Mr Leslie Gwindi were fruitless yesterday.
