HARARE City Council’s interim chairperson of the Workplace Disability Committee, Mr Shakespeare Nyambi, has called on the local authority to emulate others that have allocated stands to their workers with disabilities.
Speaking at a disabilities meeting held at Rowan Martin on Tuesday, Mr Nyambi also urged the council to look into the welfare of these employees after their retirement.
“I urge the director of housing to look into allocating tables and markets to council employees with disabilities and other opportunities like commercial stands,” he said.
“We are saying if they are given a commercial stand as people with disabilities, they can build malls that they can survive on after retirement.
“If you look at the situational analysis carried out, the majority of people with disabilities within City of Harare are above 40 years and are heading towards retirement.”
Mr Nyambi urged council to consider people with disabilities so that they paid consistently.
“There are not many of us,” he said.
