Harare in need of US$24m

from the lake.
Using available funding, the rehabilitation of the plants is expected to be completed by end of next year. Should urgent funding be made available, the work can be done in six months.
Harare waste water manager, Eng Samuel Muserere, confirmed that Lake Chivero was ranked among the world’s most polluted lakes and was placed on the International Lake Basin Management programme, an inclusion that allows the rehabilitation of the lake to receive international attention.
He said of the 144 million litres of sewer that pass through Firle, only 54 million litres were treated, while the rest were discharged into the Mukuvisi River.
All the 120 million litres of sewer that pass through Crowbourough is discharged into the Marimba River without treatment.
Chitungwiza, which is 30km away from the lake also discharges its raw sewer in Nyatsime River.
The river feeds into the lake.
Eng Muserere said a number of solutions are available but lamented that the more significant ones required funding.
