A HARARE man was dragged to court over a debt dispute after failing to settle an outstanding payment for services rendered.
Innocent Maruwa told the court that Peter Chinyawakobvi owed him US$70, presenting proof that the debt had been outstanding since 2024.
Chinyawakobvi, however, disputed the amount, insisting that he only owed US$50. He explained that part of the money had already been given to his child, who had helped Maruwa mix cement.
“My child assisted him and was given US$20 from the US$70, leaving US$50 which was meant for Innocent,” he said.
He added that he had not been able to pay Maruwa, stating, “I have not had the money to pay him.”
Chinyawakobvi further alleged that Maruwa had been visiting his home, accompanied by a man he described as a “thug”, who claimed to be a lawyer, demanding payment.
He asked the court to bar the alleged “lawyer” from coming to his residence. Maruwa maintained that he was owed US$70 and stood by his claim, relying on records showing the debt had accumulated over time.
After hearing submissions from both parties, the court ordered Chinyawakobvi to pay US$50 by April 15, noting that this was the amount agreed upon.
