MOTORISTS in Harare appear to have embraced self-service parking zones introduced by City Parking in Harare’s central business district.

The new system, which eliminates the need for parking marshals, is expected to bring convenience to motorists, significantly reducing delays.

The system, which is now operational along Third Street between Jason Moyo Avenue and Robert Mugabe Road, and Park Street between Jason Moyo Avenue and Samora Machel Avenue enables drivers to pay for parking through digital platforms and automated meters without interacting with attendants.

When Zimpapers Online visited both parking lots, motorists were parking and paying for parking without any difficulties.

Motorists who spoke to the Zimpapers Online crew said the technology has simplified parking.

“I can now park without feeling pressured or rushed. I just scan and pay. It’s quick,” said Miss Sharron Munda.

Another motorist, Mr Jimmy Khumalo on Park Street, said: “The system has removed potential for arguments that used to happen when marshals approached you before you even stepped out of the vehicle.”

Out of 25 motorists interviewed, 18 said the self-service system had reduced delays and allowed them to move faster, while 20 said it had eliminated the tensions often associated with misunderstandings over payments or enforcement.

Sixteen motorists cited convenience and said they preferred using phones or card payments over handling cash.

Some, however, raised concern about network challenges that occasionally affect mobile transactions, with five motorists pointing to connectivity issues.

Only three said they still preferred human interaction.
