Harare opts to buy refuse trucks

 Herald Reporter

Harare City Council said it has opted to buy new trucks instead of hiring the plant and equipment for refuse collection to the tune of US$1 million.

City spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme yesterday said they have since taken the cost-effective route.

“As part of due diligence, the council sought the cost of hiring and when the figures were presented it was deemed unnecessary to hire because of the huge costs.

“It was then agreed to allow the due process in the acquisition of new trucks to take place. The tender closed yesterday (Wednesday).  An award has been made and we are now waiting for the delivery of the trucks,” he said.

According to the recent joint Environmental Management and Finance and Development committee meeting, the city fathers had proposed to hire the equipment for two months.

The minutes partly read that “council approves the dump clearance plan that is to be implemented in residential areas by the acting director of works from mid-August 2021 to mid-October 2021.

“That council approves an approximate expenditure of US$1 275 516 in hiring the trucks.”

According to the breakdown, the council was likely going to part with a total of US$986 850 or $83 882 250.

US$897 750 or local currency $76 308 750 was for hiring 10 tippers for dump clearance for all suburbs.

For the spreading and compaction of waste (Golden Quarry), the local authority proposed to hire a D8 dozer for US$40 500 or $3 442 500 and a front end loader for US$48 600 or local currency $4 131 000.
