This brings the cumulative figure of common diarrhoea cases to 460 786 since the beginning of 2012 and 284 deaths.
“The December deaths were reported from Harare Central Hospital (1) and Chipinge district (2). The provinces which reported the highest numbers of diarrhoea cases were Harare (1 088) and Mashonaland Central (897),” said Head of Epidemiology and Disease, Dr Portia Manangazira in the Weekly Report on Epidemic — Prone Diseases, Deaths and Public Health Events.
She said of the total cases, 47,1 percent were reported in children under the age of five years. “The national completeness report for week 51 decreased from 79 percent to 61 percent while timeliness also decreased from 79 percent to 58 percent,” said Dr Manangazira.
She said this was because more than eight districts did not submit their weekly reports and as such the figure could have been higher.
“Murehwa, Marondera, Lupane, Umzingwane, Kariba, Beitbridge, Umguza, Chiredzi and Masvingo districts did not report,” said Dr Manangazira.
She said there was one new suspected typhoid case reported this week.
“The case was reported from Chegutu district in Mashonaland West province. The cumulative figures for typhoid since October 2011 are 5 816 suspected cases, 103 confirmed cases and six deaths,” said Dr Manangazira.
She said there were no suspected cases of cholera reported. “The cumulative for cholera is 12 suspected cases, 11 confirmed and one death since January 2012,” said Dr Manangazira.
“Clinical dysentery cases reported this week are 609 and no deaths. Of the reported cases 149 (24,59 percent) were from the under five years. The provinces, which reported the highest numbers of dysentery cases were Mashonaland Central (113) and Midlands (100). The cumulative figures for dysentery are 43 418 and 22 deaths,” said Dr Manangazira.
