Harare says no to three-wheel taxis and mushika-mushika

Three-wheeled taxis should not be allowed to operate or move on Harare roads as a means of public transport, Harare City Council has said.

This is outlined in the city’s adopted Draft Master Plan 2025-2045, which also proposes banning kombis within the next three years and pirate taxis with immediate effect.

The latest move comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of these vehicles in suburbs such as Mabvuku and Budiriro, where they have become popular modes of transport.

In Mabvuku, the tricycles are ferrying people from Tafara to Gazebo and even as far as Mbare Musika.

The planned ban is part of the city’s broader transformative plan to bring sanity to the transport sector.

Other measures include phasing out kombis within the next three years and immediately stopping pirate taxis from operating.
