Harare City Council’s top executives, including the town clerk, are earning huge amounts as high as US$30 000 per month while the lowest ranked director is pocketing US$15 000, Mayor Jacob Mafume said.
Giving evidence before the Commission of Inquiry into Harare’s affairs, Mayor Mafume also said the top executives splashed US$1 million on their vehicles during the past election period.
He said the salaries of top executives remain a closely guarded secret, with him also denied the opportunity to look at them.
Mayor Mafume claimed that the only time he viewed the salaries was when an acting Human Resources Manager allowed him to browse through following an order from the town clerk.
