Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands and the southern parts of Matabeleland North should brace for thunderstorms and heavy rains from 19 February until 20 February, the Meteorological Services Department has said.
The department issued an advisory indicating that these regions may experience rainfall exceeding 50mm, accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
According to the MSD, a thick cloud is slowly approaching the western borders of the country from Botswana.
“This cloud is expected to bring moisture from both the north-west and south-east, leading to heavy rainfall that is anticipated to cause heavy rainfall, as well as strong winds in provinces such as Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, and southern parts of Matabeleland North,” said the department.
“This weather phenomenon is projected to begin around noon on Wednesday and continue into the early hours of Thursday.”
The department highlighted the risks associated with this weather.
“There is a chance of flash floods in flood-prone areas and river basins, and residents should be aware that roads may be slippery, while visibility will be reduced by the rainfall,” said MSD.
In light of this, the MSD urged residents to watch out for heavy rainfall and flash flooding and to seek shelter indoors.
