WARD 16 Harare West Councillor Denford Ngadziore on Monday held a meeting with residents in his ward to map a way forward on robbery cases that have been reported.
In an interview at Mabelreign district office, Cllr Ngadziore said he invited residents’ association chairpersons, municipal police and other stakeholders to map out an urgent solution to the issue of robberies.
“On the issue of boom gates, we will seek a waiver for temporary permits for roads that are not major roads so that residents can install boom gates,” he said.
“And the boom gates should be modern boom gates that are neat and residents can just press a button.
“Our idea is that, where possible, they are supposed to be solar powered or battery operated, so this is the solution that we are going to have.”
Cllr Ngadziore said a follow-up meeting is expected to be held on Thursday at Cleveland House, where the director of town planning and the director of works are expected to attend.
He said there are crime hotspots known by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and residents, which the City of Harare will focus on.
“Starting next week, we expect installation of street lights to start. Residents who want to put solar lights will be assisted by the City of Harare public lighting department so that they adhere to the required standards,” he said.
“There is current infrastructure for Zesa and TelOne and the council. We will ask that the council give a waiver to residents who want to install street lights, internet and street cameras guided by council,” he said.
Clr Ngadziore said a temporary site office for municipal police is expected to be open at the district office this week or next week to respond to emergencies at night and patrol from 6 pm to 6 am, working together with the ZRP, in order to get immediate and urgent solutions towards that.
Harare West member of Parliament, Ms Joana Mamombe, promised to push for funding for the issue of solar street lights in the next Constituency Development Fund.
