Harare Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, has unveiled an improvement plan aimed at revitalising the capital city’s First Street.
Mayor Mafume said the project will see pavements and damaged road sections being refurbished, adding that they will work with informal traders to improve their working conditions.
Speaking during a tour of First Street yesterday, Mayor Mafume said council is also going to improve the lighting on the street.
He was accompanied by City of Harare executives during the tour.
“There will be cameras and sound speakers all over, and we will bring back a carnival atmosphere to First Street, including street theatres, music and open-air concerts,” said the Mayor.
He said the improvements are expected to be completed in the next two to three months.
“We have come to First Street, which used to be Harare’s flagship. It was a place of beauty and good aesthetics. This is why we are looking at the street to see how we can restore it. This is why we have brought our executives, including City Parking, to make sure the city’s beauty is restored.”
“We need to ensure that the buildings are in good shape. People can earn a living in a better environment.
“There was that video of commuter omnibuses dangerously moving on First Street, nearly running over people. That is going to be a thing of the past.”
Mayor Mafume said the city will consult all stakeholders as they implement the project.
