EX FC Platinum holding midfielder Winston Mhango says a lucrative contract with a scent of the green note from Zambia’s Kabwe Warriors compelled him to ditch the Zimbabwean football champions at a time they badly needed his services.
Mhango’s contract with FC Platinum expired on 31 December 2018 after he renewed a two-year contract with the Zvishavane-based team at the end of 2016.
With the player in FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza’s plans for the Caf Champions League onslaught, it was expected Mhango would sign a new contract.
Mhango played both FC Platinum’s Caf Champions League preliminary matches against CNaPS.
“Kabwe Warriors offered me a better contract as compared to FC Platinum. I’m now getting all my salary earnings and bonuses in United States dollars. I also received my signing on fee in hard currency and that was the major reason that saw me part ways with FC Platinum,” said Mhango from his new base in Zambia on Wednesday.
The gritty midfielder joined his new outfit, which plays in the Zambian Super League Region A, on a two-year contract at the beginning of the year.
Kabwe Warriors are also home to ex FC Platinum and Shabanie Mine forward Nelson Maziwisa.
Mhango made his debut for his new paymasters last weekend when they drew one-all against Lusaka Dynamos in a match he played the entire 90 minutes.
He is among nine other foreign players that Kabwe Warriors signed at the beginning of January ahead of a 10-member league that is made up Zesco United, Nkana Red Devils, Nakambala and Buildcon among other formidable sides.
Ten other teams play in the Zambia Super League Region B amid reports that a re-branded 20-member Zambian national league is set to be established after May ahead of the 2019-2020 season.
