THE late ZANU PF Central Committee member, Cde Peter Haritatos, will be remembered for his unflinching loyalty to the ruling party, Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mrs Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, has said.
Cde Haritatos, who succumbed to Covid-19 last Saturday aged 77, was accorded liberation war hero status and buried at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare yesterday.
In a graveside eulogy, Minister Mliswa-Chikoka described him as a revolutionary.
“He suffered and endured racial discrimination and human indignity at the hands of the white colonial settlers before Independence. As a result of this, he joined NDP in 1961 and ZAPU in 1962. In 1963 he went on to join ZANU PF,” she said.
Minister Mliswa-Chikoka said Cde Haritatos, who is father to Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement deputy Minister, Vangelis Haritatos, was a sincere patriot.
“The death of Cde Peter Haritatos has robbed the nation of a reliable and loyal patriot who was generous towards fellow citizens. Baba George, as he was called by his close associates, will be remembered for addressing rallies in Shona despite him being Greek. The story of Kadoma, Mhondoro-Ngezi and Chegutu will be incomplete without Cde Peter Haritatos’ name,” she said.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary, Mr Nick Mangwana and his Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement counterpart, Dr John Basera, were some of the senior Government officials at the burial.
