HARARE Amateur Swimming are hoping they can bring back the Mufakose Swimming Pool to a fully functional entity as they continue with efforts to refurbish the facility.
HAS have been working with the City of Harare as part of their social corporate responsibility to rehabilitate the swimming pool.
On Sunday they held a developmental gala at the facility aimed at pushing their vision to have the pool up and running for their future official competitions.
HAS board chairperson Rumbidzai Mahobele said they would want to see their community benefit from the pool.
“Our vision is to see our Harare swimming community benefit from use of a pool such as this one which we believe has the potential to give our swimmers an opportunity to attain fast times that enable them to qualify for championships within and outside our region.
“Being a deep pool and its size, we believe it has the potential for this.
“History has proved that some of our country’s prestigious swimmers attained qualifying times in this pool.
“Our swimmers have to wait for galas hosted by Mutare and Bulawayo to be able to attain tour times and hence we decided to host this trial gala to see whether we can secure a facility locally that can produce desired results and offer our swimmers the convenience of being in their home city,” said Mahobele.
The provincial board is looking at growing the sport in Harare province and believes the pool is an opportunity to provide the Mufakose community with a facility from which talent can be identified, also broadening their selection base.
“We also see the opportunity to offer the youth in and around this area a meaningful pastime activity, which we hope can reduce the problems associated with drug abuse and related problems among the youth,” added Mahobele.
Mahobele appealed to individuals and corporates to join hands with them and assist in restoring the facility.
