THE five armed robbers who are suspected of fatally shooting Elvis Chijaka and seriously injuring a business person and his partner in Hatfield, Harare, on Christmas Eve have appeared in court again facing five fresh counts of armed robbery as the police continue to investigate the gang’s activities.
Lameck Kabara (39), Perseverance Chihota (32), Tongesai Katoma (40), Joseph John (32) and Tafadzwa Charuma were facing five new armed robbery charges when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Yeukai Dzuda.
They were remanded in custody and advised to apply bail at the High Court.
On the first count allegations are that on April 4, 2017 Kabara and John waylaid Mr Edgar Chakadenga at his house since they knew he was a foreign currency dealer.
The court heard that when he arrived home one of the two men armed with a Walther pistol fired at his car and shattered the driver’s window while the other used a machete to break the front passenger window, demanding cash.
It is alleged Mr Chakadenga told them that the money was in the boot which the accused persons opened with a machete and found nothing so they struck him on the hand with the machete. He then handed over a satchel which contained US$23 000 and $486. After taking the money the two fled.
On the second count it is alleged that on July 17, 2020 the five waylaid Mr Peace Murimba who was coming from town going home.
The court heard that Murimba used a remote control to open the gate and drove into his yard and as he was closing it he saw the gang, one holding an AK assault rifle and another holding a pistol.
It is the State’s case that the accused persons hit the driver’s window using the butt of the rifle demanding cash and then ordered Mr Murimba to get out and lie down. They allegedly searched the complainant’s pockets and stole US$80 before disappearing.
The five accused persons used the same modus operandi to commit three other robberies.
