Beautiful murals are being painted in Bulawayo’s CBD as part of Hanzvadzi/Umnawami Mural Project to educate young girls about sex education.
Hanzvadzi Umnawami (#GirlPowerZW) is a nationwide mural project by CaliGraph in collaboration with Culture Fund, European Union and Nash Paints. It is using murals as dialogue and conversation spaces for sex education within the communities of Harare, Bulawayo and Chitungwiza.

In Bulawayo, the murals can be found on corner Jason Moyo and 4th Ave where eye-catching paintings of singer-cum-dancer Sandra Ndebele, modelling guru Sarah Mpofu, the soulful Berita Khumalo, legendary singer Busi Ncube, actress and television personality Mbo Mahocs, celebrated motivational speaker, broadcaster and activist Soneni Gwizi and Stella Nkomo are featured.
CaliGraph is the brainchild of two talented artistes Nyasha Jeche from Harare and Marcus Zvinavashe from Bulawayo.

“This project started in October with public consultations and focus group meetings. These conversations were on the role that parents, older brothers and sisters play in educating young girls about sex and how the education is delivered at home,” read the statement.
“From what we gathered and what we experienced growing up, sex education is a taboo topic in the home setup and it’s often left to be taught at school, or from experience – which is often dangerous.”
