THE Hockey Association of Zimbabwe has called on corporates and individuals to come on board and support the women’s Under-21 hockey team with resources ahead of their participation at the 2025 FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup later this year.
The tournament will take place in Santiago, Chile from December 1-13 and Zimbabwe are set to be part of the 24 finalists.
However, HAZ secretary Sarah Bennett has raised an SOS, highlighting the financial challenges the team is facing in their preparations.
Bennett, who believes Zimbabwe can have another Golden Girls’ era in hockey circles, has called for support to help the junior women’s side prepare and travel for the upcoming tournament.
“The Zimbabwe U21 Women’s Hockey Team has proudly qualified for the FIH Junior World Cup to be held in Chile this December, following a strong performance at the African Cup Qualifiers in Namibia this past April.
“This marks the fourth consecutive Junior World Cup our team has qualified for – a remarkable achievement for both our players and for Zimbabwean sport,” she said.
“However, this historic opportunity comes with significant financial challenges. Without urgent support, our athletes may not be able to compete on the world stage and showcase Zimbabwe’s talent internationally.
“We are therefore making a heartfelt appeal for sponsors and partners to help us cover the costs of travel, accommodation, training, and preparation.
“Your contribution will directly enable these young women to represent our nation with pride while also inspiring the next generation of Zimbabwean athletes.
“Your support will not only make a dream become reality for these players but will also leave a lasting impact on the growth of hockey in Zimbabwe.”
The Zimbabwe Under-21 women’s hockey team has successfully qualified for four consecutive editions of the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup, having also graced the 2016, 2022 and 2023 events.
They were placed in Group B alongside Argentina, Belgium and Wales for the upcoming event. For the first time in the history of the competition, 24 teams will take part in the event this year, with participants placed in six groups according to the draw conducted recently.
