HOCKEY team manager Carla Jones has provided a calming presence in the Zimbabwe Under-21 men’s and women’s camp as they continue their preparations for the Junior Africa Cup of Nations despite crippling financial challenges. The tournament, which is slated for March 12-19 in Egypt, serves as a direct qualifier for the Junior World Cup to be held in Malaysia and Chile later this year.
The top two teams in each category of the Junior Africa Cup of Nations book their tickets to the global showcase. The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) have since extended their begging bowl to the corporate world to help the budding players realise their dreams.
“We need your help!
“The Zimbabwe Under-21 ladies and men’s teams need your help to go and fly our flag high in Egypt 2023 at the Under-21 Junior Africa Cup (of Nations),” read a recent HAZ post on Facebook. “The teams comprise 36 energetic, spirited young men and women who need airfares, accommodation, food, kit, visas and medical aid. “Any form of assistance is greatly appreciated! We have great marketing opportunities where your brand can be seen!” The two teams have been preparing for the tournament since October last year.
“The teams have had two camps and a tournament during this time, and we have put them through a variety of sessions, which include drills, gameplay, motivation talks, team building, nutrition and fitness,” said Jones.
“We are now into our tournament phase of training.
“With 14 days to go, both teams still have two camps before departure, this on top of their regular practice sessions, fitness and nutrition.”
The teams trooped into camp yesterday, with the Under-21 ladies based in Harare while the men are in Bulawayo.
In Bulawayo, the men’s teams had two friendlies lined up against a Matabeleland men’s side, as well as Hippo and Khanimambo men’s side.
The two teams will then meet up for their final camp in Harare on March 3.
They depart for Egypt on March 8.
