‘He drives two cars, he should pay maintenance’

BEING enticed by her ex-boyfriend’s flashy lifestyle saw an Africa University student getting more than what she had bargained for after she was made pregnant and later dumped. Michelle Siwela’s efforts to have her ex-boyfriend, Nesbert Kurehwa, take care of his child were in vain, forcing her to approach the courts claiming $200 maintenance.
However, Mutare magistrate Mr Langton Mukwengi granted her $80.

According to Siwela, Kurehwa was supposed to maintain their child because he had various assets registered in his name.
“Your Worship, this man can afford to pay maintenance because he drives two cars, a Ford Ranger and a Nissan Navara. He is also building a two-storey house in Bordervale and that shows that he can part with $200 for the upkeep of his son. I am a student and I need a maid to take care of the child while I will be away at college. This man spends over $150 every day spoiling other girls from my college at the expense of his child,” she said.

Kurehwa, however, offered only $30 as maintenance for the child, arguing that he has a wife and two other children to look after. He also said he was self employed and was not in a position to pay anything more.

Said Kurehwa: “I can only part with $30 because I have another family to take care of. The cars she is talking about are not mine. One of the cars belongs to my cousin. I am not building any house either. The house she is referring to is my mother’s.”

Before delivering his verdict, Mr Mukwengi ordered Siwela to go and verify with the Mutare City Council in whose name the house was registered.

Siwela later confirmed that indeed the house was not registered in Kurehwa’s name.
Mukwengi subsequently ordered Kurehwa to pay $80 as maintenance for his child.
