He never kicked a ball beyond Grade 6 — but at just 26 years old, Clifford Dzvairo is now the youngest coach to lead a professional club into Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League!
The Hunters FC boss, who has guided his Marondera-based side to Eastern Region Division One glory, beat giants Masvingo United and Tenax to the title — proving that passion can trump playing history.
Ironically, Dzvairo’s own football dreams were cut short by a tragic childhood accident that ended his playing days while he was still in primary school.
Dzvairo began coaching while a Form 2 student, leading his school’s U15 side all the way to the provincials. Later, during his A-Level days at Kambarami High School in Mrewa, he honed his coaching craft under the guidance of teachers Mharakurwa, Mugandani, and Chiwandamira.
“They trusted me and gave me the chance to coach. That’s where it all started,” he said.
At 21, Dzvairo landed his first club job at JM Busha 54, mentored by the late Nelson Matongorere, one of Zimbabwe’s most respected coaching figures.
“He would visit me every few weeks to see how I was doing. I wouldn’t be here without him,” Dzvairo said with gratitude.
Now, the young tactician is rubbing shoulders with seasoned players like Marshall Mudewe, Stephen Makatuka, and Cabby Kamhapa, players who, despite being older, respect his authority.
“They always make sure I feel like the man in charge — it’s a blessing,” he smiled.
Dzvairo’s dream? To follow in the footsteps of African greats like Rhulani Mokwena, Pitso Mosimane, and Callisto Pasuwa — and take his coaching talent to the international stage.
