As Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Workers’ Day, the Health Ambassadors for Economic Development (4ED) organisation has paid tribute to the country’s health professionals, describing them as a cornerstone of national development and economic transformation.
In a statement to mark the occasion, the organisation’s national chairperson, Cynthia Chisiri Shatei, commended doctors, nurses and allied health staff for their resilience and unwavering commitment in the face of mounting pressures within the health sector.
Zimbabwe annually commemorates May Day in recognition of the contribution of workers to national development, with the health sector often singled out for its critical role in safeguarding the nation’s wellbeing.
Cde Chisiri Shatei said health workers remain at the frontline of both social and economic progress, noting that their dedication directly influences productivity, community wellbeing and national growth.
“On this important day, we salute our health workers across Zimbabwe for their perseverance, professionalism and selfless service. They continue to operate under demanding conditions, yet remain committed to saving lives and strengthening our health delivery systems,” she said.
She added that the work being carried out by health personnel aligns with the broader vision of achieving an upper middle income economy by 2030, where a healthy population is key to sustainable development.
Health Ambassadors for Economic Development has recently been actively involved in advocacy, capacity building initiatives and national engagements aimed at strengthening the health sector and promoting inclusive economic growth. The organisation has also publicly supported Government efforts to improve infrastructure and service delivery in major referral institutions such as Parirenyatwa and Sally Mugabe hospitals.
Cde Chisiri Shatei said such developments underscore the importance of recognising and empowering health workers.
“Our health professionals are not just caregivers; they are vital contributors to economic development. A strong health system underpins a productive workforce, and their sacrifices must be recognised and supported at all levels,” she said.
She further called for continued investment in training, welfare and modern equipment to ensure that health workers are adequately capacitated to meet growing demands.
“We urge all stakeholders to prioritise the welfare of our health personnel, from improved working conditions to access to resources and continuous professional development. This is the only way we can guarantee quality healthcare for all Zimbabweans,” she said.
Cde Chisiri Shatei also encouraged young people to pursue careers in the health sector, describing it as both a noble calling and a critical pillar of national development.
As Zimbabwe marked Workers’ Day, various organisations echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the indispensable role played by workers across sectors, with health professionals receiving particular recognition for their service, especially in times of public health challenges.
Health Ambassadors for Economic Development reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance the health sector, noting that collaboration between Government, private sector and civic organisations remains key to achieving a robust and resilient healthcare system.
“The future of our nation depends on a healthy population, and our health workers are the custodians of that future. Today, we honour them and pledge our continued support,” said Cde Chisiri Shatei.
