Health and Fitness With Sungano Shingirirai Venge: Let’s get started — Happy New Year to you all!

Your support is the pillar of my strength. Hope you are all benefiting immensely out of this.  I have got faith and high hopes that this year will bring greatness and wellness to you all. It might have taken you long to make the right decision, but am glad that finally a lot of you have done it.
In life, it is not always how you started but it’s about how you ended. No more procrastinating, no more excuses, because people who always wait for tomorrow will never get anything done, because tomorrow will

never come, tomorrow will have its own tomorrow.

If you haven’t been equipped enough to get started or to resume after a break, here is all ammunition you need to rebuild your body and remake your life.

The first question you need to ask yourself before resuming exercises is, has my body changed.  Make your own self-assessment. A lay-off often means muscle loss for body builders and weight gain for those who want to lose weight. This could change your posture, for some their guts might have started growing faster than the traffic during the Xmas holiday, but the truth is you will need your abs back.  Weight gain might start giving you some effects like lower back pain and more pressure on the knees.  Don’t wait for this to happen.  Some injuries which cause back pains can be aggravated by inactivity.

The second question you might need to ask yourself is if you have a goal. You can only know how and what to do if you know what you want to achieve. Most people can always put an effort mostly when they understand what is waiting for them at the finishing line.  For example, if your goal is to achieve muscular strength, you need to gradually increase your weights, your lifting and the number of sets you are doing on medium repetitions.

If your goal is weight or fat loss, you need to increase the total amount of work you do at any given time, which usually means a combination of using more weights, increasing the number of sets and repetitions while you are decreasing your resting or recovery between sets.
When your target is muscle growth, you need to work on a combination of more work, heavier weights and fewer sets.

The last question to ask yourself is, are you willing to try something new.  If you go back to exercises thinking that the programme that originally got you in shape will work again, you might get disappointed.  Most people will want to do the same thing over and over again.  Your body will adapt to the routine faster than it did the first time but your body will hit a plateau sooner.  Your body will need a steady supply of new exercises and routines in order for it to respond and change to what you want it to be and its performance.

Exercises lay-off are sometimes necessary to allow our bodies to recover.  But the longer the lay-off, the longer it will take you to get back into shape.  A one to two week break will not affect you much if you had already shaped your body. You cannot really lose your muscular strength within a week or two if your diet is perfect. If your muscles have fully recovered you can even push more weight soon after you have resumed.
For those who are on weight or fat loss,                       your metabolism will be still pretty high, which means your body will be still burning more calories.  Most people will start to feel the effects after a lay-off of about four weeks, much depending on your diet also.

A break of one to four months will need approximately five to six weeks to reshape your body. But it also depends with your muscle memory and how well shaped your body was before the break.
If a break is longer than six months, unfortunately you become a beginner again. To recondition your body you have to start afresh. Your comeback might not happen as fast as you might expect it. But just remain focused. Good things will always come with a bit of suffering and sweat.

More exercises next week.
Thanks for your time!
