Fresh produce vendors from Machipisa in Highfield and Harare City Council Covid-19 response teams received 400 health packs from two local organisations to ensure the Lusaka market is safer yesterday.
Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation (VISET) donated the items, which comprised hand sanitisers, gloves and face masks to informal traders and council officials operating at Lusaka Fresh Produce Market.
A similar initiative is set to be conducted at Mbare Musika today before being rolled out countrywide.
VISET executive director, Mr Samuel Wadzai said the plan was to ensure that they donated to all the satellite markets opened by the council.
“We expect that if all things go according to plan tomorrow we will be donating in Mbare, which is also open,” he said.
“We hope that we are also playing our small part in contributing to curbing the spread of Covid-19.
“We are also trying to ensure that our members get all the information and health packs to ensure that they interact with traders from clean spaces.
“As a national organisation with structures across the country, with resources permitting we hope to take this initiative to other towns.”
The donations are part and parcel of VISET’s comprehensive informal sector response plan launched on March 31.
A beneficiary who preferred to be only identified as Gogo Tino said the donation was timely.
“This is a busy market place and a donation of these key health packs is a welcome development because personally I could not afford to spare an extra dollar for the purchase of a face mask and hand sanitisers,” she said.
