People with disabilities have urged members of the European Union Election Observer Mission to impress upon their governments, the need to immediately lift the illegal sanctions against Zimbabwe which are affecting ordinary citizens.

Chairperson of People with Disabilities for Economic Development (PWD-ED) Cde Jimayi Muduvuri said two members of the European Observer Mission made an unexpected visit to his Muduvuri Pan African Referral Hospital in Kadoma for a meeting with representatives of the special interests lobby group.

Cde Muduvuri, who is also a patron of the Zimbabwe Apostolic Christian Council said Jerome Devries and Mari-Helen Thumus requested the meeting which was held behind closed doors.

“One key issue that we discussed during our closed door meeting was the issue of sanctions. I advised them to remove sanctions since they are making the playing field uneven,” Cde Muduvuri said.

“I had to call two of our staff members who are disabled and they also told them that sanctions were affecting ordinary people like us.

“However, they said as the European Union, they had already lifted sanctions, which I am not aware of, but I made it clear that they must convince their allies, especially the Americans, to lift the illegal sanctions that they are currently maintaining.”

The team, Cde Muduvuri said, also asked for an assessment of the political situation to which he replied that last week’s elections were the most peaceful he had ever witnessed with the opposition being given loads of space in the media to sell ideas.

Mr Muduvuri said Devries and Thumus asked if CCC leader Mr Nelson Chamisa stood a chance of winning the presidential election and whether there would be a peaceful transfer of power if the opposition was to triumph.

“They asked me if the Government was going to hand over power to Chamisa if he were to win and I told them anyone who won in Zimbabwe would be conferred with power,” he said. “The duo appeared to be trying to armstwist him to say things that suited their overall agenda.

“ I told them straight up that Chamisa was never going to win since he had no structures and there was no way he would form a Government under such a scenario.”
