HERALD EDITORIAL COMMENT: Let’s rally behind BBA reps

With two representatives in the houses, hopes are high that as a country we will go far in the competition and possibly this time take the ultimate prize.

It is gratifying to note that for the most part, Zimbabweans are once again solidly behind their compatriots and cheering them on.

The common belief that our representative last year lost due to “other factors” beyond the stated competition guidelines seems to have created new followers of the reality show for the greater support of our compatriots.

We have seen the same expression of nationalism and patriotism displayed in many fields.
There are many initiatives to promote the perception of the country home and away, spanning the corporate, sports, arts and public sectors.

We have seen such initiatives as the “Buy Zimbabwe Campaign” and the different tourism promotional activities and events.
Just as it takes all sorts to make the world, we all have a part to play in nation building and it starts with supporting our ambassadors to the world, whoever they might be.

As long as they are raising the flag high, they deserve to hear our combined voices urging them on to glory.
The national sports teams receive much adoration, encouragement and support from citizens across the board.

The only thing that matters is that one has raised the flag.
These brand ambassadors have done much in showing the world that the many negatives spread about the country are mere opinions and not facts.

When she won an Olympic gold in Athens in 2004, Kirsty Coventry was feted as the heroine that she is and up to today, locally and abroad.

Her name is a synonymous with the talent and riches that Zimbabwe has.
Last year’s Zimbabwean Big Brother housemate Munyaradzi Chidzonga’s pride in the country made him an instant hero to many.

In contrast Gamu Nhengu’s desperate bid for personal glory based on lies about the mother country left a bitter taste in many ordinary Zimbabweans’ mouths.

But, holding our heads high and proclaiming our pride in who we are should not be perceived as a special achievement, but a natural and instinctive course of action.

If nothing else, the Big Brother show has given us yet another rallying point to proclaim and prove that we love Zimbabwe.
In this spirit, we really urge Econet Wireless as one of the best performing companies in the country to review their 50 cent tariffs on BBA voting downwards to levels more in line with the others in the region to give our people more chances to support our duo in the house.
Let us all do it for our country!
