AMBITIOUS Herentals FC have set their sights on completing what would be a rare Castle Lager Premier Soccer League double over champions FC Platinum when the two sides clash in a reverse fixture at Mandava Stadium on Saturday.
Herentals are the last team to defeat FC Platinum after edging them 1-0 on April 30.
The Students’ coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva is confident his side could be one of the few teams in the league to complete a double over the Zvishavane miners.
“The fact that we are the last team to record a victory against FC Platinum gives us confidence that we can complete a double going into Saturday’s match.
“We still need a positive result against them, regardless of their form at the moment. I know that they are doing very well,” said Mutiwekuziva.
Herentals have targeted a top-four finish this season.
With the two sides expected to clash in the Chibuku Super Cup semi-final next weekend, Mutiwekuziva will also be using the encounter to prepare for the knock-out competition.
“We are meeting them again in the Chibuku Super Cup semi-final next weekend; hence, we have got a lot to learn this weekend that will give us good preparation for the semi-final.”
FC Platinum have only recorded three defeats this season.
Norman Mapeza’s rebuilding exercise has been one of the success stories of the domestic premiership, and FC Platinum have been edging closer to the title with each passing weekend.
They are now just six points from being confirmed champions of the 2021-2022 season.
But Mapeza maintains the remaining games will even be tougher for his side.
“We need to maximise home advantage. We lost our first game against Herentals in Harare and it is something that I do not want to talk about because there is nothing to talk about.
“They have been doing good of late, collecting points at home and some away, hence we are facing a quality side,” he said.
