Heroes day, ZDF day preparations in full swing

Preparations for the 2025 Heroes Day and Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Day commemorations are at an advanced stage, with Cabinet confirming that all is on track for the national events scheduled for this August.

In a post-Cabinet media briefing this afternoon, Government revealed that the main Heroes Day commemorations will take place at the National Heroes Acre in Harare on August 11, 2025.

As is tradition, provincial ceremonies will also be held across the country to honour the sacrifices of Zimbabwe’s fallen heroes.

A total of 223 families of departed national heroes and heroines are expected to attend the main ceremony in Harare.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa will present national flags to families of four individuals who have been posthumously declared national heroes, that is Cde Benjamin Burombo, Brigadier-General (Rtd) Lameck Francisco Mutanda, Cde John Mbedzi and Cde Jairos Jiri.

The following day, on August 12, Rufaro Stadium will host the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day Celebrations under the theme, “Zimbabwe Defence Forces: Guaranteeing Peace and Stability for the Attainment of Vision 2030.”

Cabinet announced that rehearsals for military parades and displays are underway, with selected entertainment groups also scheduled to perform.

The commemorations will culminate in a soccer match between the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Select Team and reigning Premier Soccer League champions, Simba Bhora.

As part of the run-up to ZDF Day, the Defence Forces Community Assistance Week, which began on July 28, is ongoing and will end on August 7.

The programme includes a range of community support initiatives by the military.
