Heroes exhumers in Rusape

By yesterday, the trust had exhumed three remains which will be reburied at Rusape Heroes Acre.
FHZT secretary general Ms Anna Garikai said they would continue exhuming more remains.
“All the remains were exhumed near the heroes acre and they will be accorded decent burials at the site once the Rusape Town Council planners have marked the graves,” she said.

Ms Garikai said they were yet to hold meetings with other stakeholders to address how to deal with some of the mass graves believed to be in some of Rusape’s residential areas.

“The owners of the houses are willing to have the remains exhumed and in order for us to do this, we will need to have meetings with relevant authorities and stakeholders in the town,” she said.

Several houses in Rusape town are believed to have been built on top of shallow mass graves in which thousands of people killed by the Rhodesian Forces were buried during the liberation struggle.

Some owners of the houses have since deserted them alleging mysterious happenings that occur during the night.
There are two medium density suburbs in the town – Mabvazuva where the houses are allegedly built on top of the graves and Magamba which is near Rusape Heroes Acre.

House owners said they got to know about the developments following a visit by officials from the Fallen Heroes of Zimbabwe Trust (FHZT) with the intention of exhuming some of the remains in mass graves at Rusape Heroes Acre.
