Though people were deprived of the traditional Heroes Splash Gala this year, those who gathered at the Nkulumane Provincial Heroes in Bulawayo yesterday for the Heroes’ Day commemorations had their fair share of entertainment from various groups.
The celebrations kicked off in the morning with entertainment provided by the Zimbabwe National Army and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Brass Band. The prisons band performed renditions of legendary Dendera king Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu’s songs Ndarangarira Gamba, Spare Wheel and One Way.
Shortly after the prisons band, Amakhosikazi Enthuthuko from Bulawayo Zanu-PF Women’s League danced to a song which was in celebration of the fallen heroes leading people into a celebratory mood. Rhythm of Revolution danced to catchy tunes that reminded the crowd about the importance of uniting as Zimbabweans and celebrating the freedom and sovereignty the country enjoys because of the sacrifices of its heroes and heroines.
However, it was poet Bruce Khumalo who stole the show with his poem titled Amaqhawe Ami (My Heroes). The poem is a praise song for the bravery shown by the liberation fighters.
“Amaqhawe Ami is not just an ordinary poem. It is a piece that talks about our heroes who took it upon themselves to fight for the liberation of the country,” said Khumalo after his performance.
The commemorations were closed by the military band who gave a thrilling performance of Jiti music.
