OLYMPIAN Denilson Cyprianos has received a hero’s welcome on his return from the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
The swimmer believes he achieved his goal and proudly represented his country at the biggest stage of them all.
‘Dennyboy’, as he is affectionately known, touched down at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport yesterday afternoon to a warm welcome from the local swimming family.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of State for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Paul Nyoni and Sports and Recreation Commission provincial sports director Sam Dzvimbu, were among those who welcomed the swimmer.
Cyprianos, who has been swimming from a very young age, managed to fulfill his childhood dream of competing at the Olympics.
Yesterday’s welcome ceremony was heartwarming and a proud moment for Cyprianos.
“The most proud moment is now, getting home and seeing and remembering how small of a place we come from and the grand scheme of the world.
“Paris was amazing, I had an amazing experience and I’m remembering where it started and seeing all those faces, it really makes me feel proud to have done this and hopefully inspired some children.
”I am honoured to have the opportunity to be inspiring children and just trying to do my best every day and make them understand from a young age that no one is perfect because I’m not a perfect person.
“It is with hard work, perseverance and discipline that you can get things done.
“Mistakes happen along the way but that is all just part of the experience of life,” said Cyprianos.
Nyoni congratulated the swimming sensation for representing Zimbabwe with pride at the Olympics.
“Thank you family for this project, it takes a lot. I know what it takes to compete. Congratulations, the world is your oyster, do your thing,” said Nyoni.
