Hifa 2012 provided a platform for several Zimbabwean acts to build on their international career profiles saying “this momentum is set to continue at Hifa 2013”.
Peter said Hifa was an important platform for Zimbabwean artistes and those who have worked hard and used the opportunities brought by it such as Winky D who are still reaping the rewards of seeing Hifa as the launch pad that it is.
“These opportunities are always going to be present and are there for the picking for our Zimbabwean artistes — with over 1 000 Zimbabwean artistes and more than 200 visiting artistes, collaborations and networking opportunities are there aplenty,” said Peter.
Besides the appointment of Peter, Hifa also announced the dates of its 2013 edition which runs from April 20 to May 5.
The festival’s organisers said preparations for next year’s Hifa are already well underway.
“Confirmation of the dates marks what is the beginning of the festival’s preparations. Preparing for a festival that has more than 180 performances takes time and meticulous planning which, in fact, often starts a year or two before the actual festival hence the dates being confirmed even before we get into the new year,” said Tafadzwa Simba, Hifa’s head of media and community liaison.
Hifa is an annual six-day arts showcase encompassing acts from the music, dance, craft and applied art, theatre, visual arts and spoken word genres in a comprehensive festival programme that also encompasses workshops for the public and professional artists.
Hifa 2012 saw over 1 267 Zimbabwean artistes and 242 visiting artists drawn from 30 nationalities gracing the Festival. One hundred and eighty-seven performances of 98 different shows were held, drawn from the festival’s six genres.
Icons such as Senegalese Ismaël Lô and Zimbabwean superstar Oliver Mtukudzi proved to be star attractions at this year’s Hifa which also had novel offerings such as a free stage in Harare’s First Street as well as performances from prisoners’ groups from across Zimbabwe.
The festival organisers also indicated that they will start accepting applications to perform from the beginning of next month.
