Organisers of the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), that will run from April 29 to May 4 have launched their theme for this year .
Speaking to journalists in the capital yesterday, HIFA executive director Maria Wilson said this year’s theme will focus on the potential the artists have.
“This year we will be running under the theme ‘Switch On’.
“Basically we are saying people are full of talent which they need to switch on, so that it can become visible,” she said.
HIFA took the opportunity to unveil new members of its board with former Harare Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda, as the chairperson of the board of trustees and Manuel Bogorro is returning as the artistic director.
“Our new chairperson of the board of trustees is the former Harare Mayor Muchadei Masunda and replaces George Mutendadzamera who has relocated to South Africa and our artistic director is now Manuel Bogorro,” reads a statement from HIFA.
Bagorro, re-assumes his role of many years after stepping down as the festival’s artistic director in 2012.
Masunda has promised to bring in innovations to the annual arts festival.
“I am going to do my best for HIFA.
“My hope is to bring in more corporates because of my involvement with most of them, and hopefully we will get more support from embassies who have shown their interest in the festival.
“The key thing is that we want to give any artist, an opportunity to showcase their talents,” he said.
HIFA is a six-day annual festival and workshop programme that showcases the very best of local, regional and international arts and culture in a comprehensive festival programme of theatre, dance, music, circus, street performances and spoken word.
