“Farmers want good prices for their crop, but the problem we have is that of low yields,” said Mr Chabikwa.
“There is a need for farmers to boost yields so they can realise profits from the crop.”
Mr Chabikwa said farmers could get meaningful profits if the issue of yields was addressed.
Average yields are 770kg per hectare, according to agriculture experts, which is very low compared to the average world yield of between 1 700kg and 3 000kg per hectare achieved in other countries.
On the other hand farmers complain that they cannot achieve high yields as they are given inadequate inputs late.
Mr Chabikwa said negotiations between farmers and ginners would start next week and the teams were expected to continue meeting for two weeks before finalising on the price.
