A CHEGUTU armed robber was shot dead on Friday, while two others were arrested after a high-speed police chase in the gold mining and farming town.

The alleged criminals were identified as Valentine Dipuka, Tafadzwa Mumba and Tinashe Chimukono.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyati, confirmed the incident in a statement.

He said before their arrest, the thieves had allegedly robbed a motorist along Chinhoyi-Chegutu road near Newfound Turnoff.

Comm Nyathi said the three, who were travelling in a Honda Fit, accosted a Nissan Caravan before disembarking while brandishing machetes, which they used to threaten the driver and made off with over US$200 000.

After receiving a tip-off, the police sprang into action and tracked the suspects to the town of Chegutu.

When the police caught up with the robbers, they fled, leading to a high-speed chase, and the police had to fire shots at them, forcing them to stop their vehicle.

Dipuka and Chimukono were swiftly arrested on-site, but Mumba, who had been shot, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

The ZRP has issued a resolute warning to criminal syndicates, asserting that confrontations with law enforcement will be met with zero tolerance.
