THERE was a high turnout yesterday at the start of Black Rhinos’ trials at the National Sports Stadium B Arena.
Budding footballers swamped the B Arena to try their luck in impressing the coaches.
The trials were supervised by coach, Stanford ‘Stix’ Mutizwa, who kept an eagle eye on all the young players.
Chauya Chipembere are looking to bolster their squad for the upcoming season.
“We are happy with the turnout,” said Mutizwa.
He said their major focus was on technically gifted players.
“We are looking at those who can pass well, those who can also open up and assist.
“We look forward to select those that make the grade, so that we work with them until they are up to standard.
“Usually, I don’t believe in trials as people just come for a short period when you have a big turnout. The players won’t show you what they really have because the time is very limited.
“Like here we have a few hours with the boys. So, the time is very limited and robs us from seeing what they really have. You will have to see how they really pass, open up, and contribute to the game. We are focusing on those that are 24 years and below,” he said.
Rhinos secretary general, Edward Mutukwa, said the trials will go a long way in helping the youngsters.
“We want to give these young players a chance. It will help us not recycle old players. We have to always be ready to gel youngsters in our team to assure continuity.
“The army will also be recruiting soon and we are looking forward to feeding these boys to the army. Football wise it goes a long way for our clubs and it also empowers the boys in their lives. We are happy with the high turnout,” he said.
