THE Highlanders men’s basketball team got their 2017/18 league campaign off to a perfect start beating National University of Science and Technology (Nust) 65-52 at Khanyisile Sports Centre on Saturday.

Malcom Fisher was the highest scorer for Highlanders with 18 basket points. Highlanders coach Theo Weale was elated with the victory.

“It was important to get a positive start. It was not a convincing victory but it’s a victory all the same. We hope to build on this win and have a successful season. We hope the experience we have will help us get into the top four. Now we just have to take each game as it comes,” he said.

Highlanders roped in new faces into the team during pre-season among them Fisher, Freedom Ncube and Charlie Ndlovu. They will be hoping the new boys steer them to a respectable position by the time the season ends.

In other encounters played on Saturday, Lupane State University (LSU) beat league debutants Glow 68-43. The debutants put up a brave performance given this was their first dance in the league.

Southern Mavericks also managed to come up with a narrow 64-58 victory over Nust in a tightly contested game.

In the ladies category Highlanders failed to replicate the form shown by the men’s team as they crushed to a 50-4 defeat at the hands of Angels.
