HIGHLANDERS women basketball team which was on its way down the ladder, had a boost when an automotive company Nashua Zimbabwe offered them a sponsorship package. The bronze medallists of the 2013 National Basketball Club Championships received support bundles which came in terms of a full basketball kit and warm-up T-shirts from the Bulawayo branch of the company.
As a way to enhance the club, the automotive company also offered to pay sub-fees for every league game that the team partakes in.
The Bulawayo branch manager of Nashua Zimbabwe Oscar Fredericks told Sunday News that the sponsorship package they handed out to the Highlanders women was their way of giving back to the community as part of the organisation’s social responsibility. “As an organisation, we make it a point that we give back to the community and donating to Highlander’s women basketball team was part of the policy,” said Fredericks.
“We are still looking forward to work hand in glove with the city’s oldest club as we are also planning to donate kit bags for the team,” added Fredericks.
The firm has also assisted Churchill Boys High School in Harare with a rugby kit.
The aid by the automotive company came as a boost for the club as it had no sponsors before as most of the benefactors were only focusing on the men’s category.
Themba Phiri, the Highlanders women basketball team fitness trainer initiated the sponsorship package for the marooned team and also complemented the donation by offering socks to the team.
Roy Sikwila the coach was grateful for the aid offered by the automotive company as he said that such kind of assistance was helpful to the club as it would enhance the confidence of the players and help the club to get back to its winning ways.
“We are happy as a club to have such kind of assistance and we are certain as the technical department that the aid will positively influence the performance of the players in matches,” said Sikwila.
Although there are challenges in the team in terms of player shortages, the city’s oldest club is gradually finding its feet as they are now having organised training sessions at Highlanders Clubhouse on Tuesdays and Thursdays, something that they were not doing before.
