IT IS game on in the National Association of Secondary School Heads athletics finals which are being held at Hillcrest College just outside Mutare. The high schools athletics competitions started yesterday (Thursday) and are set to end today (Friday). All the country’s 10 provinces are represented and their respective athletes will battle for the highest number of gold medals.
Last year, Harare Province was the overall winner, with the highest number of gold medals, followed by Mashonaland East in second position, while Masvingo came third.
Manicaland weighed in on fourth position.
Philip Chikomwe, the national head in charge of athletics, said stiff competition was expected in this year’s edition of the competitions.
“On Day One, we covered some of the field events such as triple jump, hammer throw, as well as some track races such as race walking, huddles and 4×4 relay races.
“On Day Two, that is when most and all other field and track events will be finished that include javelin, long-jump, shot-put, discus, high-jump, medley relays 4×1 relay and all 100m races,” said Chikomwe.
He added that the normal athletics terms, rules and regulations would be applied and were expected to be followed by every province.
“We are anticipating very tough competition this year as compared to some of the competitions in previous years as all provinces proved to have prepared well and teams are geared for the competitions,” said Chikomwe.
