THERE was a huge turnout at the hockey Independence Trophy tournament that was held at Sunrise Sports Cub in Harare on Saturday. More than 16 men’s and women’s teams took part at the gala that was held as part of the country’s 35th independence celebrations. It was described as excellent by the hockey fixtures secretary Mike Banda.

“We’re joining the rest of the country as the hockey society in celebrating 35 years of self rule. Even in sports we acknowledge that we’ve to run our programmes as free as we see fit,” said Banda.

He said the attendance of the teams was an indication that the sport was growing in popularity in the communities around the country.

“Most teams were present and I’m very delighted that they took time to attend the tournament. The attendance shows that the sport is growing and if we had more structures in position we could realise more progress in the sport,” he said.
