POLICE have arrested Herbert Chakanyuka (57) for allegedly knocking down a minor at the intersection of Liberation Legacy Way (former Borrowdale Road) and Harare Drive in a hit-and-run accident.

The incident, which occurred on March 30, was captured on CCTV and went viral on social media platforms.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that the suspect, Herbert Chakanyuka (57), has been arrested and the victim has since been identified as Mitchelle Kamupfumo (7),” reads a statement released on Friday.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Chakanyuka was facing multiple charges.

He is expected to appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, police in Mbare yesterday recovered a Mercedes Benz (ADL 4916) which was stolen during a robbery along Amalinda Road on April 4.

The car was reportedly blocked by a Toyota Vitz vehicle near Churu Farm, before two unknown suspects wielding knives and stones disembarked and smashed the passenger window.

“The victim was robbed of two cellphones, $110, US$900 and the car,” police said in a tweet yesterday.
